Stay Active, Healthy and Strong While Traveling This Summer
Summer travel can present challenges, especially to the consistency of our exercise routines. Being away for months or weeks at a time and moving around to different locations can be a logistical challenge to maintain our workouts. This doesn’t mean we have to undo all our healthy habits we worked hard on during the year. For this month’s newsletter we will give you some practical tips to help keep you on track this summer.
Why staying active while traveling matters
Vacation is a time to be able to relax and enjoy new experiences with your family and friends but staying active while you’re away can help you feel your best. Even small amounts of daily movement can reduce stiffness after long car rides or flights. Bouts of exercise can also improve circulation, maintain your strength and balance, and give you more energy to explore your destination.
How to stay active while traveling
Consider your options before leaving – Think about what your days will look like during your time away. Will you have access to a hotel gym? Will you be walking a lot? Are you staying with family? Having a plan ahead of time removes all the guess work and will enable you to make healthy choices much easier.
Pack some exercise essentials – Set aside time before you depart to go over what supplies you might need. Comfortable shoes, light dumb bells, workout clothes, and elastic bands are all great options to have access to while away on travel.
Keep a minimum movement goal – Prioritizing daily movement while you are away is extremely important. Just 2 weeks of inactivity can lead to reduced joint range of motion. Daily movement doesn’t have to mean a full workout. You can explore your destination by going on walks around the local area. If your destination includes stairs, use them instead of an elevator. If you’re staying at a hotel or other destination with a pool, take a swim. Ask your trainer to provide you with a 10-minute mobility routine in the morning or evening. These small activities can help keep your joints moving and muscles engaged so when you return home you feel refreshed instead of stiff and achy.
By following these tips, you will most likely enjoy your time away even more! Imagine, you aren’t waking up with sore joints because you’re continuing to take care of them. You’re energized and looking forward to whatever plans are in place for the day. If you like the sound of that, we encourage you to put the tips shared today into action. Enjoy your traveling and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures when you return.
