Spring Into Mobility
Why mobility is the foundation for longevity
Mobility can be defined as the ability to move through a joints full range of motion with control and without pain. Being able to move well sets the foundation for getting stronger because it creates better input and proprioception(Awareness of the position and movement of the body) creating more opportunities for increasing strength.
What causes a decline in Mobility
Sedentary lifestyles, lack of movement, poor diet and hydration can contribute to greater joint stiffness, especially later in life. As we age, maintaining mobility becomes even more important. Loss of joint motion affects balance, posture, strength, and even confidence in movement. Daily tasks such as getting up from the floor, stepping over a curb, or reaching overhead require healthy joint motion. Protecting our mobility helps us protect our independence.
Mobility vs Flexibility
It is also important to understand that mobility and flexibility are not the same. Flexibility is being able to passively lengthen a muscle whereas mobility is active and requires a level of control. Mobility requires coordination, stability, and strength. Simply stretching a muscle isn’t always enough to create long term change.
Mobility is the foundation for balance, strength and endurance. When we prioritize controlled movement through full ranges of motion, we create a body that is not only stronger, but more adaptable and resilient over time. Below are ways you can improve your mobility
-Prioritize hydration and nutrient dense foods
-Take movement breaks if you spend a lot of time sitting
-Practice quality movements while using breathing versus focusing strictly on reps and speed
-Move every joint daily in multiple planes
