Get your kicks in 2006

Your Body Basics Crew jump-started the year on a good note and we hope you did too! If you made a New Year’s resolution, we hope you are sticking to it to fulfill whatever goal and objective you had in mind for this year.

In the Jan/Feb issue, we kicked off our Get your kicks in 2006 series with an article about starting your day off right with a good, healthy, well-balanced breakfast. This month, we thought we would hit on the issue of stress as we give you one avenue of stress relief that is bound to make you crack a smile.

Reduce your stress laugh a little (or a lot)

Can laughter really help with stress? It sure can! Laughter is a healing activity. It can also be quite a workout. Have you ever laughed so hard that your abs actually hurt and your face muscles are exhausted?! That’s some good exercise you just put your body through. It was so much fun, I bet you never realized the benefits that laughter has on your health and well being.

Laughter operates on three levels: the biophysical, the biochemical and the bioenergetic levels.

At the biophysical level, laughter moves lymph fluid around your body by the convulsions experienced during laughter. Your body needs to move to properly circulate lymph fluid so that your immune system may carry out its natural functions. Laughter is a great way to do just that.

Laughter also increases oxygenation of your body at both the cellular and organ levels. When you laugh, you intake large amounts of oxygen in huge gulps, and as this process is repeated, your body goes through somewhat of a temporary hyperventilation session.

Increasing your intake of oxygen is a good thing for your body. Oxygen is one of the primary catalysts for biological energy in the body and is an element of intracellular energy that’s absolutely necessary to sustain human life.

Laughing also boosts circulation and gets your body moving! The harder you laugh, the greater these effects will be. If you can find a way to get yourself rolling around with outrageous laughter, you are going to feel wonderful and get a great workout in the process!

On the biochemical level, when you laugh, your body generates a wealth of healing chemicals such as serotonin (a brain chemical that affects emotions, behavior and thought) as well as other immune-boosting chemicals like interleukins (substances that can improve the body’s natural response to disease).

In other words, laughter can help defeat the negative health affects of chronic stress. To learn more about this, check out the emerging science called psychoneuroimmunology the study of the link between the mind and the immune system.

Here are some tips on finding something to laugh about: rent a funny movie, hang out with a comical friend, observe a child (they still know how to play and laugh) and finally, train at Body Basics where there is always a good time to be had.

Stepping Out Events

Grocery Shopping with your Body Basics Fitness Coach

As your Body Basics FitnessCoaches, we are committed to helping you, our clients, reach your goals. To assist in our doing just that, we have added a new service that we feel is very beneficial – Grocery shopping with your FC! While fitness is our main focus here, we realize that nutrition plays a huge part in what we do and especially in your success. We also realize that nutrition may seem like a complex and tricky subject – but it does not have to be. Therefore, we are taking our services outside of the studio and into the local grocery stores. Your FC will show you how to make a selection of healthy foods and how to compare nutrition labels when deciding what product to put in your cart. This is also a time for us to see what you would normally do, and then we can together tweak what needs to be tweaked. Get ready for a fun session of education, inspiration and empowerment with your Body Basics FitnessCoach.

The cost of one one-hour shopping session is the same as a one hour one-on-one training session in the studio. Please meet with your FitnessCoach to make an appointment.

Coming Soon desert Dawgs Boot Camp

Beginning May 30th of this year BodyBasics will begin to offer the outdoor favorite, Desert Dawgs Boot Camp again. This program is for those of you who have a great level of fitness already, enjoy running and being outdoors, and like the idea of being pushed harder than you would push yourself. Boot Campers take part in exercise sessions outdoors that improve fitness in all areas; strength, endurance, flexibility, speed, balance, and of course mental toughness. Just ask those who have been there (20 lb. PVC piping overhead in the wash) and they will tell you. Sign ups begin in April so call for further details.
