Maureen’s Story
The pursuit of health and fitness has been a personal journey for me. Several years ago, after the birth of my second child, I found myself 80 lbs. overweight. The first step I took was cleaning up my family’s and my eating patterns by eliminating processed foods from our diet. I lost 10 lbs. in one year.
The next step was to incorporate physical activity into my hectic life. I completed the Tucson Half Marathon with the Better Than Ever group in 2001. I lost 10 more lbs. In 2003, I completed the full Tucson Marathon, but was disappointed that didn’t lose any weight, despite all the additional training I did to prepare for the race.
Between 2003 and 2007, with proper diet and regular exercise, including strength training, I managed to lose another 5 lbs. Exercise and eating well felt good. I was enjoying good health, stamina and strength, but I was frustrated that, despite my best efforts, I was still 55 lbs. overweight.
That’s when I sought the help of a personal trainer. After working out with him for six weeks, I lost 5 lbs. While I was elated, my trainer was concerned. He felt my weight loss was not in keeping with the level of effort and discipline I had put forth.
My trainer encouraged me to talk to my doctor. After simple blood tests, I was diagnosed with hypothyroid disease, a condition that made my weight loss an even more difficult process. I began treatment in 2007. Since that time, I’ve lost an additional 32 lbs. and now more closely resemble the athlete I always felt was within.
Encouraged by my hard won success, I decided to switch careers and become a personal trainer so I could help others to achieve and enjoy the health and vitality I’ve found. I am still working day by day toward my ultimate weight loss goal, confident that I will succeed.
